Đô Temple (Đền Đô) – Bac Ninh
DO TEMPLE, A SPECIAL NATIONAL MONUMENT
The Ly Bat De Temple or Do Temple (Vietnamese: Đền Lý Bát Đế or Đền Đô), formal Buddhist name Co Phap shrine, is a temple near Ha Noi of which the central section was built in 1028 on the death of Ly Thai To, and the complex enlarged as seven of his descendant Ly Dynasty emperors were also buried at the shrine – Lý Bát Đế means “Eight Ly Emperors.”: Ly Thai To (1009 – 1028), Ly Thai Tong (1028 – 1054), Ly Thanh Tong (1054 – 1072), Ly Nhan Tong (1072 – 1128), Ly Than Tong (1128-1138), Ly Anh Tong (1138 – 1175), Ly Cao Tong (1175 – 1210), Ly Hue Tong (1210 -1224).
Do Temple was constructed in 11th century in Co Phap village which is now called Dinh Bang ward, Tu Son town, Bac Ninh province – a province lays in the North-East of Ha Noi. Since then, Do Temple has been repaired and upgraded many times. Do Temple consists of 21 separate constructions. The centre called Linh Cung is where statues and altars of eight emperors are placed… There are many other constructions in Do Temple such as Chuyen Bong house, Front worshipping house, Phuong Dinh house, Vuong Mau shrine, Stelae house, palanquins and horses house, Van Chi hall, Vo Chi hall, Five Dragon Gate, Water Pavilion and Half Moon Lake, … All are elaborately built, painted, intricately carved.
Do Temple is a National worshipping place for people from all parts of the country. President Ho Chi Minh and many other state leaders visited Do Temple.
Unfortunately, Do Temple was completely destroyed by wars in 1952. Since 1989, Do Temple has been reconstrucsted as old model thanks to the donations of people from both Vietnam and foreign countries.
Do Temple festival is hold annually in Dinh Bang ward from 14th to 16th March according to lunar calendar and the main part of the festival hold in day 15th to commemorate the day King Ly Thai To ascended the throne (15″ March of Canh Tuat – 1010). Do temple was recognized as a National historical & cultural relic (Decision N°154-VHQD on January 23, 1991 by Ministry of Culture and Information – present, now the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism). Do Temple is recorded in the record book “Do Temple – where worship place of eight Ly emperors as it’s well-known for most people, (Decision No994/KLVN/2011 on April 17, 2011 by Viet Nam Record book Center).
On December 31, 2014, The Tombs and Temple of the Ly emperors are recognized as a special National Monument (Decision N°2048/QD-TTg by Prime Minister).
