It is the burial place as well as the place of worship dedicated to emperor Tu Duc and queen Le Thien Anh. (Tu Duc was the 4th emperor in the nguyen dynasty, who ruled during 36 years, from 1848to 1883 (the longest reign of all the 13 nguyen emperors).

Tu Duc’s tomb was constructed within 3 years (1864-1867). Tt was initially used as a royal out palace (Khiem palace, as it was named) but later it became Khiem tomb after the emperor passed away. The tomb, surrounded with a 1500 meter-long wall, was built of stone. Located on an area of 12 hectares, the copmplex contains about 50 constructions arranged in 2 main areas: Khiem tomb (including the ritual and burial areas) and Boi tomb and Khiem Tho tomb, which are located in the east.

The center of Tu Duc’s tomb boasts 1.56 hectare-wide Luu khiem lake which, alongside 3 bridges, Tinh Khiem islet in the middle, Du Khiem pavilion, and Xung Khiem pavilion on either side, creates the dramatic landscape of the tomb.
The ritual area contains a complex of constructions such as Hoa Khiem temple (for worshipping emperor Tu Duc and queen Le Thien Anh), Luong Khiem temple (for worshipping his queen mother Tu Du), Linh khiem royal theatre, on khiem pavilion ( for keeping the emperor’s attire and belongings), etc.

The burial area contains the salutation court, the stele house, Buu Thanh and Huyen Cung (where the emperor’s remains were buried). Emperor Kien Phuc, one of emperor Tu Duc’s adopted sons, briefly ruled in 1884. Kien Phuc’s tomb (Boi tomb) and queen Le Thien Anh’s tomb (Khiem Tho tomb) were constructed in 1885 and 1902 respectively.
Boi tomb contains Chap khiem temple (for worshipping emperor Kien phuc) and Huyen Cung (the place where emperor Kien Phuc was laid to rest). Adjacent to boi tomb is Khiem Tho tomb, the final resting place of queen Le Thien Anh (emperor Tu Duc’s first-rank wife).

There is another ritual area for worshipping the predecessors’ royal concubines (known as Chi Khiem temple) and the dwelling area for the emperor’s concubines (Y Khiem and Tri khiem pavilions). Tu duc’s tomb is a construction of great value, which is highly appreciated as the pinnacle of vietnamese traditional architecture of royal tombs.
